Walls of Natural Stone, Gabion or Fair-Faced Concrete
Art. 60 of the St. Niklaus building and zoning regulations governs the design of the surroundings. Under para. 3, terrain in the residential use zones may generally be built up by no more than 2.50 metres, with a slope angle of no more than 60 percent. Walls are to be used sparingly and built from natural stone, gabions or fair-faced concrete.
Gabions and natural stone walls contain many connected, dry cavities. Wasp species that nest in cavities can build their nest there. From the outside, sometimes only the entry hole is visible.
Checking Walls, Treating at the Entrance Hole
If I see wasps flying in St. Niklaus but no nest, I also look at retaining and garden walls made of natural stone or gabions. You will find the exact procedure on wasp nest removal in Upper Valais.
The municipality extends over 89.23 square kilometres and, besides the village, Gasenried and Herbriggen, includes 29 further inhabited hamlets. If you report wasps flying to me, I therefore already ask on the phone which locality it is, and then whether there are natural stone walls or gabions by the house, so that I can factor the walls into the first visit.
If the nest sits in the wall, I treat it directly at the entry hole and do not remove it. A follow-up check comes later. With fair-faced concrete walls, this search for cavities does not apply. Nests in timber facades are a different matter, more on that on wasp nest removal in Saas-Fee.
Even in Hard-to-Reach Places
If a nest is hard to reach, I use my IRATA Level 3 training. RS Construction has existed since 2023, the base is at Landstrasse 51a in Naters.

Questions about Wasp nest removal in St. Niklaus
Usually not. I treat the nest at the entry hole, and the wall stays untouched. Under Art. 60 BZR St. Niklaus, gabions are one of the intended wall types alongside natural stone and fair-faced concrete.
