Bird Deterrence in St. Niklaus on the Flat Roof, Without Drilling

The building and dwelling register lists a building in St. Niklaus as an industrial building from the 1971 to 1980 construction period, with around 10,720 square metres of floor area.

The 2023 orthophoto shows a connected ensemble of flat roofs there. Under Art. 49 of the building and zoning regulations (status as at 24.05.2024), flat roofs may only be approved in justified exceptional cases, for instance for smaller single-storey buildings and extensions or for functional buildings in the public interest.

On a flat roof of this size, pigeons can find perching and nesting spots at roof edges, parapets, technical superstructures and ventilation openings. I consider a net over the whole roof surface disproportionate there, and every drill hole through the waterproofing would be a potential leak point.

I protect the roof edge, parapet and superstructures specifically with spikes or tensioned wire, fixed for example with clamp or ballast systems. Work is carried out with fall protection.
