Timber Share on the Facade and Possible Nesting Sites
The building and zoning regulations apply across the whole municipal area, for buildings that are newly built, converted or put to a new use. Article 35 paragraph 4 requires that at least one third of the total facade area consists of timber, and the timber should be applied in larger, connected areas. In the heritage and Stadel protection zone, only lower storeys of quarried rubble stone and upper storeys of Wandholz are also permitted, under a stone slab roof.
Timber cladding, canopies and balconies made of wood have joints and cavities where a nest can find room. Where the wasps actually build on your house, I only see once I am on site.
Without a Blind Box, the Search Shifts
In the townscape protection perimeter, the design and building regulations (Gestaltungsbaureglement) expressly ban blinds and shutters. The roller shutter box, where I would otherwise look first, therefore does not exist there. Instead, I look at timber cladding, canopies, balcony panelling and soffits.
On the protected Stadel groups with Wandholz upper storeys and stone slab roofs, I work with low-impact methods and make no structural change to the Wandholz upper storeys.
