Mowing Deadline of 31 July
Article 26 of the Leuk municipal police regulations (Polizeireglement) requires owners of vacant plots in the building zone to mow unused land by 31 July at the latest. Anyone who fails to do so first receives a warning, after which the municipality has the land mown at the owner's expense.
This duty applies in the building zone across the whole municipality of Leuk, so in Leuk-Stadt, Susten and Erschmatt. Guttet-Feschel is not included, as it is a separate municipality. For the on-site assessment, I follow the same process as for any Wasp nest removal in Upper Valais, while also keeping the mowing deadline in mind.
Ground Nests Barely Visible in Tall Grass
The deadline falls within wasp season. Ground nests of the common wasp and the German wasp often sit in mouse holes and ground cavities and are barely visible in tall grass before a strimmer or mower hits them.
On request, I therefore search a fallow plot specifically for entry holes before the mowing date. If I find a nest, I mark and treat it, after which mowing can proceed as normal. Rodents and cockroaches in the same municipality are covered on Pest control Leuk.
