Bird Deterrence in Fiesch on the Flat Roof Edges of the Holiday Village Zone

Under Article 74 of the Fiesch building and zoning regulations (Bau- und Zonenreglement), flat roofs are expressly permitted in the holiday village zone for tourist buildings. Three storeys are provided for, and the buildings are staggered in building length and roof form and adapted to the existing building fabric. For gable roofs, Article 32 of the regulations generally specifies a pitch of 18 to 35 degrees, covered with natural stone, tiles, shingles or slate.

A flat roof has parapet and balustrade edges, in other words horizontal surfaces where birds can perch. A classic gable roof does not have these in the same way.

On flat-roof buildings in the holiday village zone, I therefore first check the parapet, balustrade and ledge edges and fit tensioned wire or spikes there. If the roof is accessible, I work from the roof with fall protection, otherwise by rope access or from a lifting platform.
